A Life-Saving Heart Transplant for a Six-Year-Old Boy

Неймовірна рятівна операція для хлопчика, який отримав шанс на нове життя.

The Story of Mykola Zherebov

A six-year-old boy, Mykola Zherebov, has successfully received a donor heart transplant. The procedure was performed by specialists at the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Mykola was born with a congenital heart defect and had already undergone two prior operations. His life was sustained by an ECMO machine in critical condition, and the need for a new heart became urgent over time. A potential donor emerged in March 2026, a boy from the Odesa region. Tragically, after sustaining an injury, doctors fought for his life but were unable to save him. The donor's parents gave consent for posthumous organ donation, which made it possible to save other lives. Mykola's transplant proceeded after compatibility was confirmed.

Mykola Zherebov is now recovering and feeling well. During his rehabilitation, he was visited by footballer Andrii Telesnenko, who has been living with a donor heart for two years and is a coach for 'Chornomorets'. This heart transplant story is part of a broader picture of complex pediatric medical cases in Ukraine, a country where access to advanced care is vital for many children.

Other Pediatric Medical Cases

Among other recent cases:

  • Eight-year-old Zakhar from the Ivano-Frankivsk region lived for half a year without kidneys on dialysis. He underwent a second kidney transplant, having received his first transplant from his grandmother in 2023. The new organ was damaged by disease.
  • Doctors in Lviv saved the life of 10-year-old Daria, who had suffered from constant abdominal pain since birth and was diagnosed with a congenital intestinal pathology - Hirschsprung's disease.
  • Medics in Lviv performed surgery on two-year-old Sofia, who had lived with a battery lodged in her esophagus all winter. Her condition continually worsened, and doctors were unable to determine her diagnosis for three months.

These cases underscore the critical importance of organ donation and the professionalism of medical teams who save children's lives daily.

The heart transplant for Mykola Zherebov, along with these other medical cases, highlights the crucial role of donation in Ukraine, where many children require complex medical interventions. Growing public awareness and support for organ donation can significantly improve the transplantation landscape and save more lives. Furthermore, such stories emphasize the dedication of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly for their patients despite challenges within the healthcare system.
