AI in Nuclear Weapons: How Artificial Intelligence Can Trigger a Global Crisis

Штучний інтелект у ядерній сфері: потенційні загрози глобальної безпеці.

Artificial Intelligence in Nuclear Deterrence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly important component of modern defense systems, but its integration into nuclear deterrence carries serious risks. It could lead to the creation of misinformation and false alarm signals, threatening global security. History already knows examples where false alerts could have catastrophic consequences, such as in 1983 with Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov, who identified a false alarm from the missile attack warning system. His decision prevented a potential nuclear conflict.

Control Over Nuclear Arsenal

Today, the issue of control over nuclear arsenals remains critically important. In this context, the USA and China have reached preliminary agreements to maintain exclusively human control over the nuclear 'button'. This indicates an awareness of the risks associated with automating decisions that could have fatal consequences.

At the same time, artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve. For example, the chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk's xAI, topped the December reliability ranking of artificial intelligence for 2025. This underscores the potential of AI in various fields, but also raises questions about its military applications. As experience shows, the combination of technologies and nuclear weapons could become a source of new threats, so it is important to maintain a balance between innovation and security.

Given the contemporary challenges in the field of security and deterrence, it is crucial for governments to continue dialogue on the control of nuclear weapons and the risks associated with automated systems. Cooperation between countries such as the USA and China could be a key factor in preventing possible mistakes or abuses in the use of AI for defense purposes.

This opens new horizons for exploring the ethics and security of technologies in the military sphere, as the growing role of AI is an integral part of the future of global security.
