Ukrainian Foreign Minister Addresses G7 Meeting
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha participated in a ministerial meeting of the G7 and Ukraine, held on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference. He briefed participants on Russia's systematic attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure and called for stronger sanctions against the aggressor. Sybiha also detailed Ukraine's urgent requirements for air defense systems and funding, stressing the critical importance of sustained international support for the country's defense.
Appeals for International Support and Action
Andrii Sybiha pointed out that Russian strikes on energy facilities are deliberately timed with weather conditions:
“A drop in temperature is accompanied by an increase in attacks. This is a deliberate Russian strategy.”The minister called for a comprehensive travel ban to Europe, the US, Canada, Japan, and other nations for military personnel, veterans, and their family members involved in Russian aggression. He emphasized that the PURL program covers 90 percent of Ukraine's needs for air defense missiles, and that Ukraine requires approximately $15 billion this year to maintain its defensive capabilities.
Sybiha also expressed gratitude to the French G7 presidency for its support and urged increased sanctions pressure on Russia. The minister highlighted the ongoing risks to nuclear safety, noting that Russian threats persist. He reminded attendees that exactly one year ago, a Russian drone damaged the New Safe Confinement structure at Chornobyl, posing a direct safety hazard.
“Russian strikes pose a nuclear threat to all of Europe. This is why every missile and every air defense system provided to Ukraine today is a contribution to the security of the whole of Europe.”
This meeting at the Munich Security Conference underscores the international community's continued support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing war. Sybiha's statements on the need for tougher sanctions and military aid highlight the severity of the situation facing Ukraine. With escalating threats, particularly to nuclear safety, international assistance is more crucial than ever for ensuring regional stability. The Munich conference is a key annual forum where global security leaders discuss pressing international challenges.
