Latvia’s Move to Restrict Entry for Russian Representatives Wins Kyiv’s Approval

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has voiced strong support for a decision by his Latvian counterpart, Baiba Braže, to place Russian Federation representatives attending the Venice Biennale on Latvia’s list of banned individuals. The measure effectively bars key Russian figures linked to the renowned cultural exhibition from entering the country.

Sybiha underscored the significance of the action, stating:

'Dear Baiba Braže, thank you for your solidarity and principled support for Ukraine, which is reflected in this decision.' Andrii Sybiha

The minister added that the entry ban sends a clear message: cultural platforms must not be exploited to legitimize Russia’s aggressive policies, as Moscow continues its full-scale war against Ukraine, now in its fifth year.

European Values and International Solidarity

Sybiha further noted that this step 'fully aligns with European values' and echoes recent calls from European leaders to limit Russia’s presence at global cultural events. He expressed gratitude to Latvia for its leadership and unwavering stance in backing Ukraine.

This decision by Latvia highlights the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. By restricting entry for Russian participants at cultural gatherings, European nations are reinforcing a broader strategy to isolate Russia culturally, potentially damaging its international standing. Latvia’s position, alongside that of other European states, could serve as a model for coordinated responses to Russian hostility.

As the situation evolves, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasizes the importance of a united European front. In a recent meeting of EU foreign ministers, he outlined key priorities, including financial support and sanctions against Russia.
