Meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers
On April 21, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga participated online in the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting. He addressed his European counterparts with several key demands, including the need to lift the blockade on several already agreed decisions.
- Allocation of €90 billion in financial aid to Ukraine.
- Introduction of the 20th package of sanctions by the European Union against the Russian Federation.
- Launch of negotiation clusters within the framework of the Euro-Integration process.
The minister confirmed that Ukraine and Moldova are fully prepared to open these clusters.
Discussion of the military situation and peace initiatives
During the discussion, Sybiga informed participants about the situation at the front, noting the successes of the Ukrainian army in striking remote targets in the Russian territory. He emphasized the urgent need to increase investments in Ukraine's defense industry and enhance its air defense. The topic of peace efforts was also addressed, with the Ukrainian side confirming readiness for concrete steps to end the war.
A particular emphasis was placed on the urgency of financial support. Sybiga stated:
€90 billion is an absolute priority. This decision has already been agreed upon, and it needs to be implemented, as any delay causes damage. There are currently no obstacles, even artificial barriers have been removed. The European Union has all the necessary tools to lift this blockade this week. We expect them to be engaged in the coming days. - Andriy Sybiga
The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also noted that the EU's adoption of these critically important decisions is dictated not only by solidarity but also by its own interests:
I will not tire of repeating: the EU makes these key decisions not just out of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. It is a necessity for protecting the European Union itself, its citizens, and its interests. - Andriy Sybiga
Additionally, the minister thanked for the work on promoting Euro-integration during Poland and Denmark's presidency in the EU. He expressed hope that the new presidential duo - Cyprus and Ireland - will provide new historic steps towards the expansion of the European Union. Sybiga summarized:
Once again, I emphasize: for real diplomacy, Ukraine must be in a strong position. Every decision in support of our country and to increase pressure on Russia strengthens our negotiating positions.
The participation of the Ukrainian minister in the EU Council meeting highlights the importance of international support for Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict. For the Russian audience, it is important to understand that the unblocking of aid and new sanctions are viewed by the West as tools to influence the situation in the region. As Sybiga noted, these decisions determine not only the security of Ukraine but the stability of all of Europe.
In the context of intensified international support, the G7 meeting also highlighted the need to tighten sanctions against Russia and discuss the path for Ukraine's EU membership. This underscores the importance of Western unity on security and financial assistance, which is a relevant topic given the recent statements from the Ukrainian minister.
