Call for Fresh Sanctions

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on the European Union to impose new sanctions on Russia, specifically targeting its shadow fleet and introducing restrictions against the oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft. He made these remarks while addressing an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels via video link on January 29, 2026. The minister stressed the critical importance of adopting a powerful 20th sanctions package against the Russian Federation, arguing there is no alternative to increasing pressure on the aggressor.

“I reiterated that there is no alternative to increasing pressure on Russia. By blocking its shadow fleet. By adopting a powerful 20th sanctions package. Following the American example, by imposing sanctions on the companies Lukoil and Rosneft,” he stated.

Frontline Situation

In his address, Andrii Sybiha also briefed his European counterparts on the situation at the frontline, detailing Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and civilian populations. He outlined Ukraine's urgent military and humanitarian needs and mentioned meetings involving delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Sybiha emphasized the importance of making 2026 a decisive year for Ukraine's European integration. This diplomatic push comes as Western allies continue to debate the most effective ways to curtail Russia's war-fighting capabilities.

Ukraine's efforts to ramp up international pressure on Russia, with EU support, remain central to the current geopolitical landscape. Sybiha underscored the necessity for proactive measures from the international community to ensure security and stability in the region.

Andrii Sybiha's appeal to the EU for new sanctions against Russia reflects the continuation of Ukraine's diplomatic strategy aimed at securing international backing in its struggle against aggression. Implementing such restrictions could impact Russia's economic resources and diminish its capacity to sustain military operations. It is also significant that Ukraine is actively communicating its challenges and requirements, which may foster greater solidarity from Western partners during this difficult period.
