Ukrainian Defense Forces Strike Oil Refinery and Pumping Station Deep Inside Russia

Сили оборони України завдають удару по критичній інфраструктурі на території противника.

Ukraine Hits Russian Infrastructure in Latest Attacks

Over May 28–29, Ukraine’s military conducted strikes on targets located deep within Russian territory. These operations resulted in damage to the Volgograd Oil Refinery—where a fire was reported—and the Yaroslavl-3 oil pumping station. Additional targets included a Tor-M2 air defense missile system, command posts, and logistics depots.

The Volgograd refinery, operated by Lukoil, sustained hits to its primary crude processing units:

  • AVT-1
  • AVT-3
  • AVT-5
  • AVT-6

Secondary processing units were also affected. This facility has an annual capacity of roughly 14 million tons of oil. The fire on-site indicates the strike caused serious damage.

The Yaroslavl-3 pumping station, part of Transneft’s network, was also struck. Two oil storage tanks—one holding 50,000 cubic meters and another 20,000 cubic meters—caught fire. As a key node on the Surgut-Polotsk pipeline, this disruption could significantly impact fuel supply chains.

Targets and Strategic Importance

Other targets in the operation included:

  • A Tor-M2 air defense system near Berdyansk in the Zaporizhzhia region;
  • A command observation post close to Lyman Pershyi in Kharkiv Oblast;
  • Drone control centers near Tyotkino (Kursk region), Komar (Donetsk region), and Nesteryanka (Zaporizhzhia region);
  • A logistics depot near Aidar in Luhansk region.

Strikes also targeted concentrations of Russian personnel in several locations, including:

  • Novopetrivka;
  • Novohryhorivka (Zaporizhzhia region);
  • Rodynske (Donetsk region);
  • Kleven (Kursk region);
  • Sichneve (Dnipropetrovsk region);
  • Basivka (Sumy region).
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated: 'Ukraine’s defense forces will continue to systematically take measures to weaken the Russian occupiers and compel Russia to cease its armed aggression against Ukraine.'

These attacks on critical Russian infrastructure could cripple Moscow’s military logistics and reduce its operational capabilities. By targeting oil refineries and pumping stations, Ukraine is pursuing a strategy to degrade Russia’s resource base. Such actions also demonstrate Kyiv’s willingness to conduct operations deep behind enemy lines, potentially reshaping the conflict’s trajectory.

In a related development, Ukrainian forces have also targeted critical infrastructure in Russia, including a refinery in Ryazan and naval vessels in Kaspiysk. These coordinated strikes highlight the ongoing strategic efforts of Ukraine to disrupt Russian military capabilities and supply lines.
