Ukrainian Defense Forces Strike Two Russian Oil Refineries in Yaroslavl and Astrakhan

Сили оборони України завдали удару по російським нафтопереробним заводам у Ярославлі та Астрахані.

Attacks on Oil and Gas Processing Facilities

On May 13, Ukraine’s defense forces launched strikes on primary oil refining units at the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery in Yaroslavl, as well as targeting the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant in the Astrakhan region, where a fire broke out. Located in the administrative center of Russia’s Yaroslavl Oblast, the Yaroslavl refinery is a key facility producing gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel—critical for supporting the logistics of the Russian military.

Additionally, the strike on the Astrakhan gas processing plant, which is part of Russia’s gas transportation and fuel infrastructure, ignited a blaze on the facility’s grounds. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that

“the extent of the damage is being clarified”
. The staff also emphasized that
“strikes on enemy targets will continue systematically until Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine ceases entirely”
.

Ukraine’s Strategic Direction

These actions underscore Ukraine’s strategic commitment to dismantling critical infrastructure that fuels Russia’s war effort. By targeting oil and gas processing plants, Ukraine aims to significantly hinder Russia’s ability to supply fuel to its armed forces, potentially altering the conflict’s trajectory. It is important to note that such operations are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to weaken the adversary’s resource base and bolster its own national security.

The recent strikes on Russian oil facilities highlight a broader trend in Ukraine's military strategy. For instance, Ukrainian drones have also targeted refineries and military assets in other regions, further emphasizing the ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's fuel supply and military logistics. Such operations are crucial in shifting the balance of power in the conflict.
