According to the SWPC NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, geomagnetic storms are expected on April 17 and 18, which could impact various aspects of daily life. The forecast indicates a planetary K-index of 5.7 on April 17, classified as a strong storm. This activity is predicted to intensify on April 18, with the K-index rising to 6.

Geomagnetic activity is measured on a scale from 0 to 9. A K-index of 5 or higher signifies a strong magnetic storm capable of disrupting communication infrastructure, including:

  • cellular towers,
  • satellites,
  • radio frequencies and GPRS.

Fluctuations between 1 and 4 on the K-index are considered minor, while storms rated 5 and above are classified as a red-level event. Auroras, or northern lights, may become visible at K-index levels of 7 or 8.

These storms are triggered by solar flares that eject charged particles—primarily protons and electrons—toward Earth. The resulting disturbances can also affect atmospheric pressure, which may lead to noticeable physical discomfort for some individuals. Solar activity follows an 11-year cycle, and we are currently in a period of increased solar maximum activity.

  • ensuring adequate sleep;
  • consuming healthy, nutritious food;
  • avoiding spicy, salty, fatty foods and alcohol;
  • reducing caffeine intake;
  • drinking herbal teas and plenty of water.

Taking walks in fresh air can be beneficial, though direct sunlight should be avoided. Light physical exercise may improve overall well-being and boost energy. It is also important to steer clear of conflicts and stressful situations to maintain emotional balance.

Individuals with chronic health conditions are advised to get extra rest and keep necessary medications on hand. A contrast shower in the morning or a relaxing bath in the evening may help improve how you feel. Given the storm forecasts, following these suggestions can significantly ease the impact of this space weather event.
