Families Appeal Directly to Activision

Relatives of those who lost their lives in the 2022 crowd crush in Seoul have called on Activision to remove archival footage of the disaster featured in the opening cinematic of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The fatal incident occurred during Halloween celebrations in the Itaewon district, resulting in 159 deaths. South Korean groups, including the Bereaved Families Association and the Korean Gaming Users Association, have urged Activision not only to take down the footage but also to issue a formal apology for incorporating such sensitive material into the game.

Activision Responds Amid Public Outcry

On October 29, the Bereaved Families Association released an official statement through South Korean broadcaster SBS demanding the immediate removal of the footage from the game. Members of the association emphasized that

“using a tragedy of this nature as entertainment content is deeply inappropriate and insensitive”
.

They further highlighted that the Itaewon disaster caused hundreds of casualties, and that many first responders and witnesses continue to endure psychological trauma.

Activision acknowledged the inclusion of archival video in the game's introduction but denied any intention to downplay the severity of the tragedy or disrespect the victims. The company affirmed it did not aim to offend the bereaved families and expressed willingness to engage in ongoing dialogue with all concerned parties. Despite this, both associations maintain pressure on Activision, stressing the importance of honoring the memory of those who died.

This controversy underscores the delicate balance between entertainment media and the respectful handling of sensitive real-world events. The use of archival footage tied to tragic incidents can provoke strong negative reactions, particularly from those directly affected. Open communication between content creators and the public is increasingly vital to prevent similar conflicts in the future.
