Dmytro Kharchyshyn's Military Service
Valeriy Kharchyshyn, frontman of the popular Ukrainian band 'Druha Rika', has revealed that his eldest son, Dmytro, is currently serving as an officer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Dmytro, who holds the rank of lieutenant, is now stationed in Zhytomyr, where he serves as an instructor at the Zhytomyr Military Institute, training the next generation of Ukrainian soldiers. This duty prevented him from attending the band's 30th-anniversary concert, held on March 8 at the Palace of Sports, as his command did not grant him leave.
Dmytro volunteered for military service immediately after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. He initially served as a combat engineer in northern Ukraine before completing officer training courses, which led to his current teaching position.
“My eldest son is practically the same age as 'Druha Rika', maybe a year or two younger. I regret that he couldn't make it to our concert; his command wouldn't let him go.”

The Band's Charitable Initiatives
While marking its 30th anniversary, 'Druha Rika' also released a charity remake of their music video for the song 'Vzhe ne sam' (No Longer Alone), now titled 'Vzhe ne som' (No Longer a Catfish). The video aims to raise 15 million hryvnias to support Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR). The funds are intended for purchasing:
- an evacuation boat,
- drones,
- and server equipment.
The new video features cameos from Ukrainian comedians Mark Kutsevalov, Artem Damnytskyi, and the duo 'Bumper ta Sus'. Valeriy Kharchyshyn added, “Dmytro fought to be transferred from his unit. He is now at the Zhytomyr Military Institute. When I visit Zhytomyr, we see each other.”
Dmytro Kharchyshyn's service highlights the direct involvement of Ukraine's younger generation in the nation's defense, while the band's fundraising efforts demonstrate how cultural figures are supporting the military. This story is a common reality in Ukraine, where personal life and public service are deeply intertwined during wartime.
In addition to Dmytro Kharchyshyn's military commitments, the band has also been actively supporting Ukraine through various initiatives. Recently, 'Druha Rika' managed to raise substantial funds during their anniversary concert, which is detailed in our coverage of how the band contributed to military intelligence efforts. This highlights the band's ongoing dedication to both their music and their country, showcasing the profound impact of their charitable actions amidst the current challenges.
