Rising Impact of Unmanned Systems in Ukraine's Armed Forces
In a private briefing for journalists, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported a dramatic increase in the effectiveness of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces. He stated that the proportion of strikes carried out by drones has surged from 4% to 33% since the summer of 2025, when this specialized branch was formally established. This remarkable growth demonstrates the successful scaling and refinement of drone warfare capabilities within both the regular army and territorial defense units. This shift reflects a broader global trend where unmanned systems are reshaping modern battlefield tactics.
Drones now account for approximately 60% of all firepower effects on the front line, with artillery providing the remaining 40%. Syrskyi emphasized that additional drone battalions are being integrated into assault regiments, with every line battalion operating its own drone company. Furthermore, each brigade is slated to form a dedicated drone battalion, while territorial defense brigades will have two such battalions.
A Strategic Framework for Unmanned Warfare
Syrskyi noted that the first four territorial defense brigades have already been organized with three infantry battalions and two unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) battalions each. He also mentioned a "kill zone" extending 15-20 kilometers. Significantly, the Ukrainian military has created a dedicated command for unmanned air defense systems, underscoring a strategic, institutional approach to leveraging cutting-edge technology in combat operations.
Oleksandr Syrskyi stressed that, despite the technological factor, war remains a human endeavor.
He highlighted the critical importance of the moral and psychological well-being of personnel and ensuring their safety, which he described as a primary focus for Ukraine's defense forces.
The enhanced effectiveness of unmanned systems marks a pivotal stage in the evolution of Ukraine's military capabilities, showcasing the armed forces' adaptation to new technologies in contemporary warfare. The active deployment of drones is poised to significantly alter the tactical landscape at the front and boost the combat readiness of units, thereby strengthening the nation's overall defense. The concurrent focus on the psychological state of service members points to a comprehensive approach to warfare, where technical and human elements advance side by side.
