Petition Calls for Sanctions Against Sergey Bubka

Vladyslav Heraskevych, a leading Ukrainian skeleton athlete, has formally submitted a petition demanding sanctions against International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Sergey Bubka and the revocation of his 'Hero of Ukraine' title. The news outlet 'Glavcom' reported on the petition, citing the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers' website. Heraskevych, who is a prominent figure in Ukrainian skeleton, outlined his arguments during an address to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on February 26, 2026.

The Controversy Surrounding Sergey Bubka

Sergey Bubka, the former pole vault world record holder and an IOC member, holds the 'Hero of Ukraine' award. However, the Ukrainian anti-corruption watchdog 'Chesno' has listed him in its 'Register of Traitors' for alleged collaboration with Russian occupying forces. In his parliamentary speech, Vladyslav Heraskevych stated:

"I believe Sergey Bubka is not worthy of holding the nation's highest honor, the title 'Hero of Ukraine.' During Russia's full-scale war against our country, defenders are dying every day. This title effectively places Bubka on the same level as those who give their lives for Ukraine." - Vladyslav Heraskevych

Heraskevych's call for sanctions against Bubka underscores his stance on the critical importance of moral integrity and accountability for those holding high state honors during wartime. This case highlights the intense scrutiny public figures face in Ukraine regarding their perceived allegiances since the Russian invasion began in 2022. The petition's progress is likely to fuel a broader national debate about the intersection of sports, national identity, and politics in a nation at war.
