Metro as a Shelter in Kyiv: Year-End Results

The metro played a separate role as a defensive structure during shelling. In 2025, underground stations were used at night by 970 thousand people during times of danger. This is more than double the figure for 2024, when about 450 thousand people were in shelters.

The most challenging period was July. During this month alone, metro stations as shelters were used by 215 thousand people due to intense night alerts.

At the same time, infrastructure upgrade works continued:

  • capital repairs of seven escalators at loaded stations were completed, including «Beresteyska», «Lybidska», «Khreshchatyk» and «Palace Ukraine»
  • 41 capital repair of carriages with complete diagnostics was carried out

Also, in June 2025, a significant event occurred in the Kyiv metro - the first woman, Kateryna Yesipchuk, received a train driver's certificate and now works on the «blue» line.

It should be noted that capital repairs of escalators in the Kyiv metro started on January 7 of this year. Repair work will be carried out at the transfer hub between the metro stations "Palace of Sports" and "Square of Ukrainian Heroes".
