Kyiv continues to adapt the urban infrastructure for people with limited mobility. In 2026, the authorities plan to make more than 30 urban facilities accessible and modernize transportation and pedestrian crossings. Some changes will also affect the capital's metro, where currently only 12 stations fully meet accessibility requirements. This was announced by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko.
Currently, only 12 stations of the metro in Kyiv are barrier-free
According to Klitschko, currently, the capital metro has 14 stations equipped with lifts and elevators.
At the same time, today only 12 stations are considered completely barrier-free, which meet all the necessary requirements for people with disabilities and other groups of people with limited mobility.
By the end of 2026, the metro plans to continue modernizing its infrastructure:
- Wider doors will be installed at 17 stations
- Tactile navigation will be arranged at another 10 stations
Kyiv is modernizing transportation and pedestrian crossings
In addition to the metro, the city continues to adapt surface transport. In 2026, the external sound information systems will receive 205 buses and 23 trams.
Moreover, the capital plans to make more than 300 pedestrian crossings barrier-free. They will install lowered curbs and tactile elements for people with visual impairments.
In addition, the entrance groups of more than 150 residential buildings will be modernized to improve accessibility.
New barrier-free spaces will appear in Obolon and the Dnipro district
The Kyiv City Administration states that this year a more accessible environment will also appear in public spaces of the capital.
In particular, work will be carried out in the park on Pryrichna Street in the Obolon district. Modernization will also begin at the "Prydmostna Slobidka" beach in the Dnipro district of Kyiv.
Separately, the authorities plan to create barrier-free access to more than 30 facilities, including shopping centers, cinemas, and public spaces.
