Slovakia Joins Global Coalition to Secure the Return of Ukrainian Children Deported by Russia

Словаччина стала частиною міжнародної коаліції, що прагне повернення українських дітей, вивезених Росією.

Slovakia Commits to International Efforts for Ukrainian Child Return

Slovakia has officially become a member of the International Coalition dedicated to the repatriation of Ukrainian children who were forcibly relocated or deported by Russia during the ongoing conflict. This development was communicated to Ukraine and Canada through a diplomatic note. Marek Eštok, the State Secretary of Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the significance of this commitment, stating:

“By joining the coalition, Slovakia is strengthening international initiatives aimed at ensuring the safe return of Ukrainian children unlawfully removed or displaced amid the war.” - Marek Eštok

Coalition’s Mission and Slovakia’s Support for Ukrainian Children

The coalition, now consisting of nearly 50 countries, focuses on:

  • Investigating cases of child abductions,
  • Facilitating their return to families,
  • Assisting in the children’s reintegration and recovery.

Slovakia has already played an active role in supporting Ukrainian children by helping repair school shelters in Ukraine, organizing recreational programs for children of Ukrainian rescuers and police officers, and enrolling thousands of Ukrainian children in its educational institutions.

“Our commitment to Ukrainian children extends well beyond this coalition,” Marek Eštok added.

In May 2026, Switzerland and Cyprus also joined the coalition. That same month, the European Union Council imposed sanctions on 16 individuals and seven organizations responsible for the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. The United Kingdom introduced similar measures, targeting 85 persons and entities—including 29 involved in Russia’s systematic deportation and forced militarization of children, and 56 linked to Kremlin’s disinformation campaigns. Canada expanded its sanctions on Russia in response to the abduction and ideological indoctrination of Ukrainian children.

Slovakia’s accession to this coalition highlights the growing global solidarity in addressing the humanitarian consequences of Russia’s aggression. It underscores increased international efforts to uphold the rights of children affected by the war. The sanctions against those involved in these deportations reflect the international community’s resolve to support Ukraine in seeking justice and restoring the well-being of the affected children.

In light of Slovakia's commitment to the coalition for the return of Ukrainian children, it is essential to highlight ongoing efforts in this area. Recently, the Presidential initiative Bring Kids Back UA successfully rescued four girls from occupied territories, showcasing the importance of international cooperation in addressing the plight of displaced children.
