Ukraine's Power Supply Disrupted

Slovakia has suspended emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. This retaliatory move comes in response to the halt of oil transportation via the 'Druzhba' pipeline. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that aid to Ukraine will not resume until the pipeline is operational again. The flow of crude oil from the Russian Federation through Ukrainian territory stopped on January 27, 2026, following extensive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. This development highlights the complex interdependencies of energy networks in Eastern Europe, where political and military conflicts directly impact critical supply chains.

State of Emergency Declared in Oil Sector

In light of these events, both Slovakia and Hungary have declared a state of emergency in their oil sectors. The two nations have also halted diesel fuel exports to Ukraine. Slovakia's share of Ukraine's electricity imports for February 2026 was significant, accounting for approximately 18%.

Robert Fico: 'If Zelenskyy thinks that blackmailing Slovakia with oil will bring Ukraine closer to the EU, he is gravely mistaken.'

This situation underscores the critical importance of energy linkages between nations, especially during wartime. As a key electricity supplier, Slovakia's actions can substantially impact Ukraine's energy security. Restoring the 'Druzhba' pipeline's operations will be a pivotal factor in improving bilateral relations and ensuring stability in the region's energy sector.
