Digital Matrimony in Ukraine
Ukraine has pioneered a fully digital marriage process, becoming the first country in the world to do so. This service, available through the government's Diia app, has united over 36,000 couples in just a year and a half. The app's innovation has gained international recognition, earning a spot on TIME's Best Inventions of 2024 list in the Apps & Software category. According to the Ministry of Justice, more than 1,700 of these unions involved military personnel, who were given access to a dedicated priority queue. This digital shift reflects a global trend of using technology to streamline bureaucratic processes.
International Attention and Future Plans
The international community is taking note of Ukraine's achievement. Recently, Deputy Minister of Justice Zoriana Stetsiuk, along with consuls and embassy representatives from European countries, visited the digital Civil Registry Office in Kyiv to observe the system. Beyond marriage, the Diia app also assists citizens with registering a child's birth and purchasing property. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Justice and the EGAP Program are jointly developing an online divorce service, which is planned for launch in the near future. The success of Diia serves as a potential model for other nations seeking to modernize their civil registration systems.
