Authorities Announce Formal Suspects
Law enforcement officials have formally named two monks from a monastery as suspects for committing sexual acts with an underage girl. The investigation uncovered evidence of not only sexual crimes but also the possession of child pornography. Both suspects are now under court-imposed restrictive measures, with one having already confessed to the charges.
Details of the Alleged Crimes
Investigators established the involvement of a 52-year-old monk in sexual offenses. He allegedly invited a girl from the church choir to his quarters, gave her alcohol, took nude photos of her with a mobile phone, and performed sexual acts. He has been notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 155 (performing sexual acts with a person under sixteen) and Part 3 of Article 301-1 (obtaining, acquiring, storing, importing, transporting, manufacturing, selling, or distributing child pornography) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Mobile phones containing illegal content were seized during searches, a finding later confirmed by forensic examinations. This suspect has been remanded in custody.
A second figure, a 24-year-old hieromonk, is also implicated. In October, while intoxicated, he allegedly committed sexual acts against the same minor. This hieromonk, who served at a monastery of the Moscow Patriarchate's church, was also notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 155 of the Criminal Code. He was detained and has fully admitted his guilt.
Both suspects face up to 15 years of imprisonment, with an additional potential ban from holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to three years. This case emerges amid longstanding reports of children suffering physical and psychological abuse at the Banchenskyi Monastery of the UOC-MP in Bukovyna. As of March 30, 2026, Ukrainian courts have not liquidated any religious organization for ignoring the requirement to sever ties with the Russian Orthodox Church, a legal mandate following Russia's full-scale invasion.
This case is part of a broader context raising questions about child protection and the accountability of religious institutions for the actions of their members.
Given the gravity of the accusations, it is crucial for law enforcement to continue the investigation and take necessary steps to ensure child safety in religious settings. Society must also remain vigilant to such cases to help prevent future violence against children.
The gravity of sexual crimes against minors is underscored by another recent case, where a man faces a potential 12-year sentence for assaulting a 5-year-old. This highlights a troubling pattern of abuse that demands urgent attention and action from authorities, reflecting the need for comprehensive measures to protect vulnerable children across various institutions.
