Stepmother Faces Trial on Three Charges After Fatal Abuse of 10-Year-Old Girl in Nikopol

Суд розгляне справу проти вітчими, яка обвинувачується у жорстокому поводженні з десятирічною дівчинкою в Нікополі, в результаті чого сталася трагедія.

Tragedy in Nikopol

Prosecutors from the Nikopol District Prosecutor's Office have completed their investigation and submitted an indictment to the court against a stepmother accused of systematically torturing her 10-year-old stepdaughter, ultimately leading to the child's death. The tragedy occurred on February 19 in the city of Nikopol. The girl was rushed to the intensive care unit of the city hospital around 5:30 PM, unconscious. Medical staff diagnosed an intracranial hematoma, a closed head injury, and a cerebral coma. Despite resuscitation efforts, the child died two hours later.

Charges and Aftermath

The accused initially claimed she struck her stepdaughter only once because the girl had taken her makeup bag. However, a forensic medical examination contradicted this account. Experts determined that the girl had been repeatedly struck with fists to the head, torso, and limbs for at least three days prior to her death. Additionally, approximately two weeks before the fatal incident, the child had suffered rib fractures that damaged her lungs. Investigators classified the overall pattern of injuries as systematic torture.

  • Article 121, Part 2 – Intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death;
  • Article 122, Part 1 – Intentional moderate bodily harm;
  • Article 127, Part 1 – Torture.

The woman is currently in custody without the possibility of bail. At the time of the tragedy, the girl's father was at work. The day after the incident, the couple’s two young children were removed by social services and placed in a center for social support of children and families.

The victim's body showed numerous bruises, hematomas, and scratch marks on her neck from fingernails. Ruslan Kravchenko, a representative of the prosecutor's office, stated:

Protecting children's rights is one of my personal priorities. We see facts that are hard to accept as reality. But we will discuss them without silence. Because every adult must clearly understand: violence against children is unacceptable. The punishment will be maximum. — Ruslan Kravchenko

This tragedy highlights serious issues related to domestic violence and child protection in Ukraine. The role of law enforcement in identifying and preventing such cases is crucial, as is ensuring proper safeguards for children who may be at risk. The findings of this investigation could serve as a catalyst for changing approaches to working with families where there is a risk of violence, and for improving social support mechanisms for children and their families.

The tragic case in Nikopol is not an isolated incident, as highlighted by another recent case where a mother was sentenced for the death of her disabled son due to starvation. Such incidents raise serious concerns about child welfare and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
