Snow on the Roof of a Car: What Are the Dangers and What Fines Are Imposed in Ukraine

This article discusses the dangers of leaving snow on cars during the winter period and the possible fines for doing so in Ukraine and other countries. Although there is no direct article in the Administrative Code of Ukraine that prohibits snow on the roof, there are regulations that can be applied to such situations. For example, according to Article 121 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (KУпАП), driving a car with limited visibility or a poorly prepared vehicle may be grounds for a fine.

In addition, Article 124 KУпАП provides for punishment for creating an emergency situation or causing a traffic accident (TA). This means that snow left on the roof of a car can lead not only to a fine but also to serious consequences if it falls off during movement and obstructs other road users.

Global Experience

The global experience also shows that problems with snow on cars are not unique to Ukraine. For example, in New Jersey, the 'Eastman Law' imposes fines for driving a snow-covered vehicle. In New Jersey, drivers can receive fines ranging from 25 to 75 dollars for failing to comply with this law. If the snow causes damage to someone else's property, the fine can reach up to 1000 dollars. For truck and bus drivers, the fines can reach 1500 dollars.

The golden rule of safety during the winter period is to clear the vehicle of snow and ice before driving. This will not only help avoid fines but also ensure safe conditions for the driver and other road users. Thus, the responsibility for the state of the vehicle lies with the driver, and adherence to the rules can prevent dangerous situations on the road.

Leaving snow on the roof of a car is a serious risk not only for the driver but also for other road users.

In Ukraine, although there is no specific law prohibiting this, the relevant articles of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses allow for the prosecution of drivers for creating dangerous situations on the road. This emphasizes the importance of adhering to basic safety rules in winter weather conditions, as failing to clear the car of snow in a timely manner can lead to serious consequences. Knowing the legislation and understanding the risks associated with winter conditions will help drivers stay safe and avoid unpleasant situations on the road.
