What Ukrainians Should Do in Poland for Legalization After the End of Temporary Protection

In Poland, the end of the temporary protection period for Ukrainians is approaching, so the rules for living in the country are gradually aligning with the general norms for foreigners. After March 2026, Ukrainian citizens will have to choose other grounds for their stay and take care of documents in advance. Visit Ukraine writes about this.

After the final amendment to the special law was signed, it became clear that the UKR status will expire on March 4, 2026. The Polish authorities are simultaneously preparing new support mechanisms, including the implementation of the CUKR residence card and simplified rules for obtaining the long-term EU resident status. Ukrainians are already advised to assess their grounds for residence and determine the optimal option.

Options for Legalization After the End of Temporary Protection

After March 4, 2026, holders of PESEL UKR will be able to apply for the same types of permits as other foreigners:

  • temporary residence under updated rules. From September 30, 2025, applications can be submitted only once, instead, a new CUKR card will come into effect with a residence permit for up to three years;
  • long-term EU residence. Applications can be made by those who have lived in Poland for at least five years, have a stable income for the last three years, and know Polish at level B1. According to Gazeta Prawna, the number of applications for this status has increased sixfold;
  • other grounds: work or business, studying at a higher education institution, family reunification, humanitarian reasons.
