There are many theories about love, but only now, thanks to modern technologies, scientists can explore the brain and understand how this feeling works. A group of researchers from Harvard University conducted a unique study using functional magnetic resonance imaging, which allowed them to understand that love has biological roots.

Neurobiology of Love

During the study, it was found that when people in love were shown pictures of their loved ones, the same areas of the brain were activated as when experiencing pleasure. This means that love can induce addiction, similar to drugs.

Chemistry of Love

Scientists also discovered that during the state of being in love, a chemical explosion occurs in the brain: the level of the pleasure hormone - dopamine increases, causing euphoria, while the level of serotonin, which is responsible for rational thinking, decreases. This explains the obsessive thoughts about the beloved person and the ambivalent behavior of lovers.

Love and Evolution

From an evolutionary perspective, love serves as a mechanism for ensuring the continuation of the species. Romantic love promotes the formation of long-lasting relationships, creating optimal conditions for raising children.

Stages of Love

The study confirmed the existence of different stages of love, each with its neurobiological characteristics. One of them is infatuation, where the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine is high, another is attachment, where a deep emotional bond is formed, as well as long-term love, which allows a couple to maintain romantic feelings even after many years together.

Love and Health

In addition to the emotional state, love is also beneficial for health: people who are happy in relationships have lower stress levels, better heart health, and improved immune systems.

Although science reveals the biological aspects of love, it remains the most mysterious feeling in human experience, inspiring and captivating people worldwide.

Science can explain the mechanisms of love, but it will never be able to fully explain its magic
. As Dr. Old notes, there is a wonderful complexity and beauty in this process that remains unchanged even after all scientific discoveries.

Love is a feeling that has biological roots, caused by chemical reactions in the brain. Neurobiologists have found that infatuation triggers a series of hormonal changes that can explain even the most intense emotional reactions and behaviors of lovers. Furthermore, love contributes not only to emotional well-being but also benefits health by reducing stress levels and improving physical condition.
