Protection from bacteria: A dog at home may lower the risk of respiratory infections in children during their first year of life

A Finnish study conducted by researchers at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare has revealed a statistical link between dog-related microorganisms in household dust and a lower frequency of respiratory infections in infants during their first year of life. The study involved 368 newborns, whose parents reported ear infections, elevated temperatures, and the use of antibiotics from the ninth week after birth until one year. The researchers emphasize that a causal relationship has not been proven, only a statistical correlation has been found.

Dust samples from the living room floor were collected when the children were two months old. Bacteria and fungi derived from dogs could explain up to a quarter of the connection between dog ownership and lower frequency of respiratory infections. The lead researcher, Anne Karvonen, noted that

"respiratory infections in early childhood are one of the risk factors for developing asthma. If some of these infections can indeed be prevented by microorganisms associated with dogs, it may potentially influence the future risk of asthma."

Pediatrician Jenni Mäki, who also participated in the study, emphasized the importance of the microbial environment in childhood for the development of the immune system, noting that 'dogs are part of this environment.' However, additional research is needed to confirm the protective role of microorganisms from dogs.

It is worth noting that other studies being conducted in 2025 and 2026 are revealing a more complex influence of contact with dogs on asthma and inflammation. Specifically, a 2025 study showed that living with pets in an urban environment may be associated with lower levels of chronic mild inflammation. A study published in May 2026 analyzed data from 99,389 children in Sweden aged 3 to 16 years diagnosed with asthma or respiratory allergies. The results showed that constant contact with dogs was not associated with an increased risk of moderate or severe asthma, although a slight increase in the risk of exacerbations was observed in children with already diagnosed asthma and allergies.

Thus, the results of the Finnish study open new opportunities for exploring the role of pets in shaping immunity in children, but final conclusions require further investigation.

These results underscore the importance of further research on the role of pets in the development of immunity and health in children. Given the growing popularity of pets, especially dogs, in many families, understanding their potential impact on children's health could have significant social and medical implications. Studies to be conducted in the coming years may provide more information on this topic and help formulate recommendations for parents on keeping pets at home, especially in the context of preventing respiratory diseases in children.
