The Sokilnyky branch of the political party European Solidarity has publicly responded to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi concerning the land situation near the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport in Lviv. This reply follows a public debate triggered by Sadovyi’s appeal to Petro Poroshenko regarding plans for large-scale residential development in Sokilnyky village, which borders the airport.
A joint memorandum has been signed by the Sokilnyky community, the Lviv Regional Military Administration, and the airport management to promote the airport's growth while preserving land designated for a future cargo terminal. The agreement emphasizes collaborative efforts to ensure the airport’s sustainable development. During the discussions, the Sokilnyky European Solidarity group stressed the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and maintaining mutual respect throughout decisions related to construction and land use.
Potential for Extensive Housing Projects
On September 29, the Lviv District Council is set to consider a proposal that could pave the way for significant residential construction in Sokilnyky, adjacent to the airport.
“The European Solidarity faction holds considerable influence within the district council and has urged Poroshenko to intervene personally to prevent high-rise buildings on lands needed for the airport’s future expansion and the establishment of a cargo hub after the war,” stated Andriy Sadovyi.
In addition, the airport has requested the court to dismiss a lawsuit challenging Sokilnyky’s master plan, citing the newly reached agreements on airport development. It is important to note that Sokilnyky functions as an independent territorial community with the authority to manage its land resources, reflecting Ukraine’s ongoing decentralization reforms.
Located southwest of Lviv, Sokilnyky has become a sought-after area for suburban residential and commercial growth. Despite the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the airport is expected to resume operations in 2024.
