Solar energy is rapidly growing: why Ukrainians are massively investing in solar power plants

Сонячна енергія стрімко розвивається: які причини популярності інвестицій українців у сонячні електростанції.

Growth of solar energy in Ukraine

Solar energy in Ukraine is demonstrating rapid growth due to several factors, including an increase in the import of solar panels and batteries, a reduction in the payback periods of solar power plants, and a rise in investments in local generation due to blackouts. According to the data, the import of solar panels from January to September 2025 increased by 2.3 times, reaching a volume of 2.053 GW. This indicates a growing interest in renewable energy sources amidst increasing electricity tariffs, which have tripled over the last three years.

The payback period for solar power plants for private households has decreased to 4-5 years, while for business projects, it is now 2-3 years. This makes investments in solar energy more attractive for Ukrainians. The import of batteries for three quarters of 2025 amounted to 957 MWh, exceeding the figure of 628 MWh for the same period in 2024. Forecasts indicate that by the end of 2025, 1.7 GW of solar power plants will be built in Ukraine, while a total of 800 MW was constructed throughout 2024.

Investments and the development of solar energy

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukrainian companies have already built and plan to build 1.06 GW of generating capacity. The total volume of invested and planned investments in solar energy amounts to UAH 28.9 billion. Experts note that the market has transitioned from panic buying to 'rational, calculated investments.'

Vladyslav Sokolovsky emphasizes that this year has seen a revival in the construction of industrial solar power stations with a capacity of over 10 MW.

Thus, the growth of solar energy in Ukraine is a result of not only increased electricity tariffs but also the active stance of investors seeking alternatives and trying to reduce their energy costs.

The growth of solar energy in Ukraine reflects positive trends in the country's transition to renewable energy sources, which becomes especially relevant in the face of contemporary challenges, including wars and energy crises. The reduction in payback periods for solar power plants makes investments more accessible, and the increased import of energy equipment indicates growing trust in the sector. This not only contributes to Ukraine's energy independence but also enhances its competitiveness in the energy resources market.
