Shift in PlayStation Game Manufacturing

On July 1 at 5:20 PM, Sony announced major changes to its PlayStation game production. Starting in January 2028, the company will cease manufacturing physical discs for new titles, moving to an all-digital distribution model. All fresh releases will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes from retailers. This marks a significant pivot for the gaming giant, which has long relied on physical media as a core part of its business.

The large-scale transition to a fully digital format will begin in January 2028. Sony representatives stated that 'these changes are a natural step to adapt to modern trends in the entertainment industry.'

Retailers will no longer sell new games in physical form, offering only digital versions. However, projects already on the market or set to launch before this date will remain unaffected.

Support for Existing Content

Older discs will continue to work fully, allowing players to keep enjoying their favorite games without any restrictions. In this way, Sony demonstrates its readiness to evolve within a fast-changing industry while still supporting existing content.

The radical shift will not impact any projects released or scheduled for release before January 2028, brand representatives confirmed.

Sony's move toward digital-only game distribution mirrors broader industry trends, where more companies are opting for online platform distribution over physical media. This also points to the growing consumer preference for digital technologies that offer convenience and faster access to content.

At the same time, the company is preserving the ability for players to use their older games, underscoring its commitment to maintaining the value of existing content amid changing consumption formats.
