Scotland becomes the first place anywhere to recycle laboratory plastic

Laboratory plastic contaminated with biological material is notoriously difficult to recycle. Now Scotland’s public water utility, Scottish Water, has launched a world-first approach: reprocessing that waste right inside the lab. The company has installed Envetec’s Generations system, which shreds and chemically disinfects disposable plastic labware, Petri dishes, and pipette tips on site. Before this, such items were typically incinerated or sent to landfill because of infection risks.

World-first technology takes lab waste out of the landfill stream

Scottish Water’s facilities in Edinburgh and Inverness run roughly three million water quality analyses every year. Staff have already decontaminated and prepped more than 72,000 used sample bottles for recycling. The old method relied on steam autoclaves, which demanded enormous amounts of electricity and water — and recyclers frequently turned away the resulting material.

The new chemical processing unit is located on site and automatically tracks details such as waste volumes, polymer types, and reductions in carbon emissions. The extra automation has also cut the time needed to handle bottles and reduced the number of waste truck journeys.
