CRS-35 Mission: Supplying the International Space Station

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has successfully transported more than 2.8 tons of supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the CRS-35 mission. The Dragon docked with the ISS on October 16 at 20:46, coinciding with the 50th birthday of NASA astronaut Anil Menon, who is currently aboard the station. The spacecraft is expected to remain attached for about a month before returning to Earth with scientific samples and waste.

The Falcon 9 rocket launched the Dragon into orbit from the U.S. Space Force base at Cape Canaveral, Florida, two days before docking. Traveling at speeds exceeding 28,000 km/h, Dragon reached the station in just 51 hours and automatically docked at the zenith port of the Harmony module.

Key Cargo and Scientific Experiments

The shipment’s highlight is the eighth set of IROSA solar panels, which will enhance the station’s power system. Additional cargo includes spare parts for the Canadarm2 robotic arm and upgraded toilet equipment.

The Crew-13 team, which recently took over station operations this month, will unload the cargo and use the delivered materials for various medical research projects. Among the experiments are:

  • 3D-printed artificial retina
  • Heart tissue models
  • Brain organoids to study Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis

One notable experiment investigates the creation of a new type of glass in microgravity. Unlike on Earth, where cells settle and deform due to gravity, in microgravity they grow volumetrically, mimicking natural processes in the human body.

This mission plays a crucial role in sustaining scientific research aboard the ISS by delivering vital resources needed for experiments in zero gravity. The installation of additional IROSA solar panels will boost the station’s energy capacity, improving overall operational efficiency. Advancements in materials and technologies, such as 3D printing in space, hold promising implications for medicine and technology on Earth, highlighting the significance of these ongoing resupply missions for scientific progress.

The recent successful delivery of cargo to the ISS marks a significant milestone in SpaceX's ongoing missions. This follows closely after the Crew-13's record-setting docking with the station, which took less than eight hours. Such rapid advancements in space logistics not only enhance operational efficiency but also pave the way for more ambitious scientific endeavors aboard the ISS.
