Over 1,000 Cases and 246 Deaths in Two Weeks: Congo's Ebola Outbreak

Більше тисячі підтверджених випадків і значна кількість летальних випадків: епідемія Еболи в Конго триває.

Ebola Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is grappling with an ongoing Ebola outbreak that has seen more than a thousand suspected cases and at least 246 fatalities in just two weeks. The cause is the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation an international public health emergency on May 17. In neighboring Uganda, nine confirmed cases and one death have been reported.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has traveled to Ituri Province to assess the situation. Currently, no confirmed vaccine exists for the Bundibugyo strain, which kills roughly one in three infected individuals. The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person's bodily fluids or contaminated objects. Previously, test samples had to be transported 1,500 kilometers to Kinshasa, but a new lab in Bunia can now deliver results within 24 hours.

Alarming Situation and Challenges in Fighting the Epidemic

The situation is deeply concerning, according to Dr. Alan Gonzalez, deputy director of the medical organization Doctors Without Borders. He noted that

“never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so quickly after an emergency was declared.” - Dr. Alan Gonzalez

Dr. Gonzalez also emphasized that “the reality is that no one knows the true scale of this outbreak,” as new suspected cases emerge daily and hundreds of samples remain untested.

Additionally, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, doctors are monitoring a 37-year-old man who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Three Red Cross volunteers have died from Ebola while on a humanitarian mission in the country.

The outbreak has led to border and airport closures, hampering the delivery of humanitarian aid. An ongoing armed conflict in the region further complicates medical efforts, and delays in sample testing create additional hurdles in combating the virus. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that

“they better understand the problems and know how to solve them,”

urging a concerted effort against the epidemic. “While we mourn those we have lost, we must do everything to avoid losing even more,” he added.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo poses a serious threat to public health, both locally and for neighboring countries. The lack of a vaccine for the rare Bundibugyo strain compounds the challenge, and the rapid spread of the disease has alarmed international organizations and medical experts. An effective response requires coordinated action from governments and humanitarian groups to secure medical resources and control the virus's transmission.
