CAS Orders IIHF to Reinstate Russian National Teams for 2026/27 World Championships

Спортивний арбітражний суд ухвалив рішення повернути збірні Росії до участі у чемпіонатах світу 2026/27.

CAS Ruling on Russian Participation

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) must allow Russian national teams to compete in international events during the 2026/27 season. This verdict is final and cannot be appealed. Previously, the IIHF had suspended Russian teams from participating in global ice hockey tournaments, but CAS dismissed all five related IIHF resolutions concerning this ban.

Background of the International Competition Status

In May 2026, the IIHF disciplinary board overturned the suspension of Russian teams, only to reinstate the ban again in July 2026. By late August 2026, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation appealed this decision to CAS. Consequently, Russia was excluded from the 2027 World Ice Hockey Championship scheduled to take place in Germany. Meanwhile, Ukraine's national team will make a historic return to the elite division for the first time in 20 years, competing in Group A alongside Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Latvia, Austria, and Slovenia.

July 2026 also saw significant developments regarding Russian athletes' involvement in international sports. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, restoring its presence on the IOC's official website for the first time since 2023. The IOC Executive Board paused its previous recommendations restricting Russian athlete participation but maintained its stance against hosting events in Russia or inviting Russian government officials to IOC functions. This shift drew criticism from Estonia and eight other European nations, who urged the European Union to cut funding to the IOC.

Additionally, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) removed restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes competing in its events and is considering reinstating their national teams in international tournaments. As Mikhail Degtyaryov stated,

"CAS rejected all five IIHF resolutions related to the suspension of Russian teams."
These unfolding events highlight the ongoing and complex debate surrounding the participation of Russian athletes in global competitions.

The CAS decision marks a significant turning point in the international sports landscape, where the inclusion of Russian teams has become a contentious legal and political issue. At the same time, Ukraine's return to the top-tier World Championship signals new opportunities for the country's sporting progress on the world stage. This evolving situation may prompt further adjustments within sports federations striving to balance geopolitical realities with principles of fair play.

As international sports dynamics continue to evolve, the recent ruling by CAS has reignited discussions about the participation of Russian teams in major competitions. This decision comes amid growing concerns over security and political implications, particularly highlighted by Ukraine's call for the relocation of significant events from Russia. Such developments underscore the complex interplay between sports and geopolitical tensions as nations navigate their positions in the global arena.
