New Spotify Features Stem from Collaboration with UMG
Spotify has announced a fresh partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) to create a generative artificial intelligence tool that enables fans to produce cover songs and remixes. However, the company has not disclosed a launch date or pricing for this service. This initiative is part of Spotify's broader effort to work with major music labels—including UMG, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe—on various AI-driven products. The move signals how streaming platforms are increasingly leveraging AI to deepen fan engagement while navigating complex rights issues.
Spotify’s co-CEO, Alex Norström, emphasized that artists and rights holders should have the final say on whether their music is used in AI tools and must receive fair compensation. He stated that the company aims to develop fan-created covers and remixes with artist consent, proper attribution, and payments to musicians and songwriters. UMG’s chairman and CEO, Lucian Grainge, believes this new format will help artists strengthen connections with fans and generate additional revenue streams.
Additional Spotify Features and Legal Hurdles
Alongside this announcement, Spotify introduced several other updates, including:
- an AI-powered tool for creating audiobooks;
- new capabilities for podcasters;
- a program for producing personalized podcasts;
- a concert ticket reservation system for top fans.
It is worth noting that services like Suno and Udio are facing legal disputes with music labels. In November 2022, Suno settled a $500 million lawsuit from Warner Music Group, while UMG reached a settlement in its own case against Udio. However, Suno still faces claims from UMG and Sony Music, and Udio continues negotiations with Sony. These ongoing legal challenges highlight the contentious landscape surrounding AI-generated music.
Spotify announced this partnership during its Investor Day, where it also showcased other new tools and features, underscoring its focus on integrating artificial intelligence into the music industry.

At the same time, the emphasis on protecting artist rights and ensuring fair compensation highlights pressing concerns tied to the use of AI technologies in the arts. This collaboration also reflects a broader industry trend of adopting innovative technologies to enhance listener experiences and support artists.
