Cloudy Weather Reduces Solar Output, Driving a 3.6% Rise in Ukraine's Power Consumption

Похмура погода знижує ефективність сонячних електростанцій, що призводить до збільшення споживання електроенергії в Україні на 3.6%.

Increase in Ukraine's Electricity Consumption

On March 6, 2023, electricity consumption in Ukraine rose by 3.6% compared to the same period the previous day. This increase was primarily driven by a drop in the efficiency of household solar power stations due to widespread cloudy weather across the country, which forced a greater reliance on the national grid.

As noted by Ukrenergo, 'the reason for the change is a decrease in the efficiency of household solar power plants due to cloudy weather over a significant part of Ukraine. This leads to an increase in the level of energy consumption from the general grid.'

Power Supply Situation

This occurs against a backdrop where consumers remain without power in regions including Kharkiv, Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Kherson oblasts. These outages are a direct result of hostile attacks on energy infrastructure, which have severely damaged the system's resilience. The ongoing conflict has made Ukraine's energy sector particularly vulnerable to such disruptions.

Furthermore, the total need for the restoration and modernization of Ukraine's energy sector over the next ten years is now estimated at $90.6 billion. This figure is 34% higher than previous damage assessments, underscoring the immense scale of the challenge. In areas currently subject to scheduled hourly blackouts, the need for economical energy use remains critical.

As Ukrenergo urges, 'please limit the use of powerful electrical appliances. If possible, shift energy-intensive processes to the nighttime - after 10:00 PM.'

The rise in electricity consumption highlights the energy sector's dependence on weather conditions, especially given the growing role of renewable sources. With infrastructure under attack and modernization requiring vast financial investment, the stability of the power supply is a critical issue for daily life and the national economy. Adhering to energy-saving recommendations can help alleviate strain on the grid during this difficult period.
