Faryon Murder Case: Suspect Zinchenko Refuses to Testify, Citing Disagreement with Lawyer

Справедливість у справі вбивства Фаріон: підозрюваний Зінченко відмовляється свідчити через конфлікт з адвокатом.

Court Hearing in the Iryna Faryon Murder Case

On June 24, a session was held at the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Lviv concerning the murder of Iryna Faryon. The accused, 18-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko, stated he was not ready to testify because his legal position had not been fully coordinated with his attorney, Larysa Kryvoruchko. Zinchenko claimed that his lawyer had not thoroughly reviewed the case materials, making it impossible to prepare for the debate phase. The next hearing has been scheduled for July 3.

Kryvoruchko confirmed that the legal position was about 75% agreed upon, but noted that the head of the Lviv pre-trial detention center had prohibited Zinchenko from calling her.

“I believe such actions are completely illegal. Therefore, I cannot fully implement and coordinate the position, although we are basically about 75% ready to finalize it,” the lawyer stated.
Zinchenko faces a potential life sentence on charges related to Faryon’s murder. Faryon died on July 19, 2024, after an assassination attempt on her life.

Case Background

Iryna Faryon was shot by an unknown assailant on Masaryka Street in Lviv. Residents had reportedly noticed a young man in the area for a week before the attack. Prosecutors from the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office have completed the pre-trial investigation, and the indictment has already been submitted to the court.

The atmosphere surrounding the Faryon case remains tense, given the severity of the charges against Vyacheslav Zinchenko. The issues with legal representation and restrictions on communication could affect the trial’s progress, as well as Zinchenko’s ability to prepare his testimony. This case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting both its societal impact and the legal challenges that may be debated in upcoming hearings.

As the case continues to unfold, the complexities of legal representation have become increasingly apparent. Recently, the suspect was assigned a temporary state-appointed attorney, which may further impact the proceedings.
