U.S. Deportations Send Ukrainian Men Back to Face Military Conscription

Повернення українських чоловіків з США для виконання військового обов'язку.

Deportations of Ukrainians from the United States

The United States has begun deporting Ukrainians who have lost their legal status within the country. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is removing individuals who either lost their legal standing or committed offenses. According to reports, during one flight, 24 out of 45 deported men were wanted for violating military registration rules. Upon arrival in Ukraine, they were immediately handed over to police, who arranged their delivery to territorial recruitment centers (TCC). This process occurs as Ukraine continues its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion.

Stories of the Deported

Among those deported was 28-year-old Volodymyr Dudnyk, who violated his student visa and committed traffic offenses in the U.S. After 51 days in a training center, he was sent to the front as a drone operator. Volodymyr shared his experience:

“When I was flying to Ukraine, I knew what awaited me. But I hoped they would at least let me go home first. Everything happened even faster than I thought. I never made it home; I still haven't seen my parents.” - Volodymyr Dudnyk

Another deportee, Anton Smovzh, was expelled after charges against him were dropped in a U.S. court. He also recounted:

“At the medical commission, they took my blood in three minutes and told me I was fit for service.” - Anton Smovzh

The Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program allowed approximately 280,000 Ukrainians to enter the United States. However, the administration of Donald Trump has suspended the acceptance of new applications for this program. Those Ukrainians who did not violate mobilization rules and updated their data on time do not immediately end up at military enlistment offices after deportation, offering them some hope of returning to a normal life. The situation highlights the complex intersection of U.S. immigration enforcement and the wartime realities in Ukraine.

The situation for Ukrainian refugees in the U.S. continues to evolve, particularly as ICE intensifies its actions against those under the U4U program. This has raised concerns about the safety and future of many individuals who fled the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the precarious nature of their status in America amid ongoing deportations.
