Temporary Authorization for Russian Oil Purchases
The United States has issued a temporary 30-day waiver, allowing India to purchase Russian oil that is already loaded onto tankers at sea. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the special license, which permits Indian refineries to acquire this oil. This measure is designed to prevent disruptions in the global oil market and will be in effect from March 5 to April 4. The decision reflects the complex balancing act Western nations face in enforcing sanctions while maintaining global energy market stability.
Secretary Bessent stated that this temporary authorization will not provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government, as it applies only to oil already in transit. In January, India sharply reduced its purchases of Russian crude, with import volumes dropping to their lowest level since November 2022 at approximately 1.1 million barrels per day.
“To keep oil flowing on the world market, the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a temporary 30-day general license,” noted Scott Bessent.
Oil Market Conditions
Bessent also emphasized that India is a vital partner for the United States and expressed hope that New Delhi would increase its purchases of American oil. This move comes as U.S. oil futures have surpassed $80 per barrel. The U.S. action underscores its aim to support global oil market stability amid shifting geopolitical conditions and high prices.
This step by the U.S. can be viewed as an attempt to maintain balance in the global energy market.
