Control over Greenland: the position of the USA and Denmark

The USA may try to establish control over Greenland by November 2023 or by July 4, 2026, which are significant dates, as the latter will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. Donald Trump confirmed his intention regarding Greenland, stating that

"we really need Greenland, absolutely"
- Donald Trump. However, Danish and Greenlandic leaders opposed such attempts, declaring the sovereignty of the island.

Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the USA

"has no right to annex any of the three countries of the Danish Kingdom"
- Mette Frederiksen. This statement was a response to actions that may indicate the USA's intentions regarding Greenland. Greenlandic leader Jens-Fredrik Nielsen also commented on this issue, calling the provocation by Katie Miller, who published a map of Greenland with the American flag, "disrespectful". He stressed that "our country is not for sale, and our future will not be determined by debates on social media."

Growing USA's interest in Greenland

Additionally, the appointment of Jeff Landry as the US special envoy for Greenland confirms the growing attention of the USA to this region. As David McAllister noted, "Greenland is sovereign. The future of Greenland will be determined in Greenland by the people of Greenland." Hence, the issue of control over Greenland remains at the center of international attention and provokes outrage among local leaders who defend the rights of their people.

The situation around Greenland highlights the importance of sovereignty and self-determination for local populations, as well as demonstrating the geopolitical interests of the USA in the northern region. In light of the growing competition for resources and strategic positions, such as access to Arctic routes, the issue of control over Greenland may become an important element of international politics in the coming years.
