The USA promises weapons to Ukraine for Christmas, but will reduce its role in NATO after 2027

Сполучені Штати готові надати Україні військову допомогу на новорічні свята, однак зменшать свою участь у НАТО після 2027 року.

Reduction of the USA's role in NATO and support for Ukraine

The USA promises Ukraine more weapons for Christmas, but plans to reduce its role in NATO after 2027, transferring responsibility to European allies. The Trump administration informed European allies that after 2027, the USA will no longer be the primary supplier of conventional weapons for NATO. This indicates a shift in Washington's strategic priorities, particularly as the Pentagon stated that the Indo-Pacific region is the main priority for the USA.

By 2027, Europe must become a leader in Alliance defense issues; otherwise, the USA will withdraw from key planning processes. The Pentagon also plans to reduce the number of high-ranking US officials in NATO's command structure, indicating an intention to decrease its military presence on the continent. Despite this, the position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) will still be held by an American.

Washington informs Europe that the era of US dominance in NATO is coming to an end. This raises concerns among European allies.

Support for Ukraine remains, but senior officials from Western countries emphasize that Europe must be prepared for the fact that the USA will no longer automatically be the first to respond within NATO. Thus, the reduction of the USA's role in NATO could have serious consequences for European security. An ultimatum that sets specific demands on Europe could lead to significant changes in the region's security architecture.

Washington demands evidence that European countries are ready to take on more responsibility for their defense, highlighting the importance of this period for the Alliance's future.

Adaptation of European countries to new conditions

In the context of reduced American military presence in Europe, European countries must adapt their defense strategies and enhance cooperation within NATO. This could lead to greater integration into European defense policy and an increase in readiness to respond to potential threats. The importance of this period emphasizes the necessity for close collaboration among European states to ensure stability and security in the region.
