US Confirms Its Orbital Weapons Capabilities
At the 2026 Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) conference, US Air Force Secretary Troy Mack announced that the United States possesses orbital weapons systems designed to protect American interests in space. This capability underpins the broader Space Control mission, aimed at maintaining dominance and readiness amid evolving threats wherever they arise.
Mack, who leads the US Air Force Department, emphasized the critical role that space-based weaponry now plays in national defense strategy. He stated:
'That is why the United States now fields orbital assets capable of safeguarding joint forces from hostile enemy actions in space.' Troy Mack
These space weapons include both kinetic systems, such as physical interceptors, and non-kinetic options like electronic jammers. Additionally, counterspace capabilities extend to ground-launched direct-ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) interceptors.
The Growing Threat from Russia
Meanwhile, Russia’s plans to deploy nuclear weapons in orbit have raised alarms within US defense circles. General Stephen Whiting, commander of the US Space Command, remarked that 'Russia remains a leading space power, continuing to invest heavily in counterspace weapons.'
Whiting further warned that the potential deployment of nuclear-armed anti-satellite weapons in orbit would jeopardize all satellites in low Earth orbit. He added:

While the 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits placing nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, it does not ban conventional weapons in space. Until now, US military counterspace arsenals have primarily consisted of ground-based electronic warfare systems targeting satellites. The Trump administration's "Golden Orb" initiative focuses on developing new space-based missile interceptors to strengthen these capabilities.
The strategic environment in space remains tense due to Russia’s active counterspace programs and the US commitment to advancing space control technologies.
