The USA files lawsuits for the confiscation of dozens of tankers with sanctioned oil

Сполучені Штати подали позови на вилучення десятків танкерів, які перевозять нафту під санкціями.

US Lawsuits Regarding Tanker Confiscation

The US government has filed several civil lawsuits for the confiscation of tankers involved in the trade of Venezuelan oil, which may lead to the arrest of dozens of vessels. These actions are a response to the increasing activity in the transportation of sanctioned oil, which, according to US authorities, violates established restrictions.

In this context, tankers involved in transporting sanctioned oil have started to change their flags to Russian en masse. Over the past two weeks, more than 15 vessels have re-registered under the Russian flag. In particular, during the last three months of 2025, 25 tankers have been transferred to the Russian flag, of which 18 occurred in December. This trend raises concerns in Washington, as it may indicate attempts to evade sanctions.

Seizure of Tankers and Consequences

The US Coast Guard has already seized the tankers Bella I and Sophia, as well as captured the tanker Olina in the Caribbean near Trinidad. This marks the fifth interception of vessels in recent weeks, highlighting the activity of US law enforcement in combating the smuggling of sanctioned oil. It is currently unknown how these events will affect the oil market and international relations; however, US actions indicate intentions to respond firmly to violations of sanctions.

This situation indicates an escalation in the US fight against illegal oil trade, especially in the context of sanctions against Venezuela. The change of tanker flags to Russian may signify attempts to bypass international restrictions, which, in turn, could lead to new diplomatic tensions between the US and Russia. As US authorities increase their activity in monitoring oil transportation, the market may respond to these actions, causing changes in prices and energy resource supplies.
