Ukraine-Russia Negotiations

Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, will participate in talks between Ukraine and Russia scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates. Witkoff will first travel to Israel on February 3rd for meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials. Following his visit to Israel, he will proceed to Abu Dhabi for a round of negotiations with Russian and Ukrainian representatives planned for February 4th and 5th.

Status of Peace Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that a trilateral meeting will be held in the UAE this week, on Wednesday and Thursday. For its part, Russia has referenced the U.S.-Russia summit that took place in Alaska in August 2025 and is promoting the so-called 'Anchorage Formula.' Kremlin officials assert that these 'understandings' should form the basis for a future peace agreement concerning Ukraine.

An American official confirmed that Witkoff will travel to Israel for meetings with high-ranking officials before heading to Abu Dhabi for the talks. While no meeting with the Iranian side is currently scheduled, contacts on this issue are ongoing. Thus, Witkoff's mission is intended to facilitate dialogue between the parties to the conflict, which has been ongoing in Ukraine for several years. The U.S. maintains that any lasting settlement must respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

These negotiations could represent a significant step in seeking a peaceful resolution to the protracted conflict. The interaction between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia during these meetings may influence the future course of events in the region and help reduce tensions. The continued focus of the international community on this issue could also spur new efforts toward achieving peace and stability in Ukraine.
