Lindsey Graham demands the return of Ukrainian children that Russia illegally exported
American Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that Russia must return all stolen Ukrainian children, or it risks being recognized as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Since the beginning of the war with Russia, over 19,000 Ukrainian children have been taken out of the country, as confirmed by Ukrainian authorities.
'The abduction of children from their home country is a disgusting and barbaric act. I intend to promote legislation that recognizes Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism under U.S. law if it does not return the children,' Graham stated.
Potential Consequences
The senator warned that the designation of a state sponsor of terrorism could make business with Russia 'radioactive for other nations and enterprises.'
International Efforts for Return
The issue of returning abducted children has led to the creation of an International Coalition, which includes 41 countries and the Council of Europe. In 2024, approximately 600 children were successfully returned thanks to the coalition's work.
Legal Consequences
International courts have begun investigations into the deportation of children: in March 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for the president of Russia and other officials, and in July of the same year, investigations into the involvement of the Belarusian Red Cross in these actions were initiated.
Relevance of the Issue
The issue of returning stolen Ukrainian children remains one of the most pressing problems in the current conflict, requiring immediate resolution at the international level.
