U.S. and Iran Agree to Halt Strikes in the Persian Gulf

США та Іран домовилися припинити військові дії в Перській затоці.

Breakthrough Agreement Between Washington and Tehran

The United States and Iran have reached a deal to cease military operations in the Persian Gulf and resume negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz. This decision follows four days of intense clashes, marked by exchanges of fire from both sides. Technical discussions related to the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 are expected to restart this week, potentially as early as Tuesday. Both nations have also committed to allowing commercial vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite Sunday's agreement, in which the U.S. and Iran decided to 'pause for now,' tensions remained high. On Thursday, an Iranian projectile struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, on Saturday, U.S. forces targeted Iranian reconnaissance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense facilities, drone storage sites, and mine-laying equipment. Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Next Steps and Emerging Threats

U.S. President Donald Trump underscored the gravity of the situation, warning that 'if Tehran backs out of the deal, the Islamic Republic of Iran will cease to exist.'

At the same time, Iran has threatened to suspend negotiations, casting doubt on the future trajectory of the conflict.

Washington has proposed holding talks in Doha, which would provide a platform to address critical issues such as Iran’s nuclear program and American sanctions. High-level discussions already took place in Switzerland earlier this month, involving:

  • U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance
  • Special Envoy Steve Witkoff
  • Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner
  • Iranian representatives

A new round of negotiations aims to build on these discussions, which could have significant implications for regional stability.

The ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran marks a crucial step toward de-escalation in the region, potentially helping to stabilize the Persian Gulf. Continued dialogue opens the door for addressing pivotal matters like Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which could have far-reaching consequences for international relations and global security. However, the risk remains that further escalations could unravel the progress made, making it essential to monitor developments and the responses of both parties as the situation evolves.

As the situation evolves, the ongoing negotiations in Switzerland play a crucial role in shaping the future of U.S.-Iran relations. The discussions aim to address not only military tensions but also broader issues such as Iran's nuclear ambitions and the impact of American sanctions, potentially influencing the stability of the region.
