Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The United States and Iran have accused each other of violating a ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz. On May 7, a series of attacks and retaliatory strikes unfolded between U.S. military forces and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Both U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and Iranian military officials have issued statements regarding this fresh escalation in the strategically vital waterway.
According to CENTCOM, American forces intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks while U.S. destroyers were transiting the Strait of Hormuz toward the Gulf of Oman. Iranian forces targeted the USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason using missiles, drones, and small attack boats. Notably, CENTCOM reported that
“no U.S. assets were struck”. In response, the United States carried out strikes on Iranian military positions, including missile and drone launch sites, command centers, and intelligence hubs. American military officials emphasized that they
“do not seek escalation”.
For its part, the IRGC claims its operation was a direct response to what it describes as a U.S. ceasefire violation and aggression against an Iranian oil tanker near the port of Jask. Iran reportedly deployed anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as explosive-laden suicide drones. The IRGC Navy asserted that it inflicted significant damage on American forces, claiming that
“three enemy warships quickly left the Strait of Hormuz area”. However, the United States has not confirmed any damage to its vessels.
Earlier reports indicated that the U.S. had already conducted strikes on Iranian territory, specifically targeting the ports of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile, with both sides continuing to trade accusations.
