U.S.-Israeli Joint Military Action Commences
On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated a joint military campaign codenamed 'Lion's Roar' targeting Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the operation, stating its objectives are to eliminate an imminent threat and destroy Iran's missile industry and naval fleet. This action is a direct response to recent Iranian military activities, including maneuvers that temporarily blocked the Strait of Hormuz during exercises. This strategic waterway is a critical global oil transit route, making its security a major international concern.
Significant Military Buildup Deployed
The Pentagon has dispatched a substantial force to the Middle East, including two aircraft carrier strike groups, each escorted by three destroyers. The deployed assets comprise:
- more than half a dozen surface warships
- nuclear-powered submarines
- dozens of military aircraft, including fifth-generation F-22 and F-16 fighter jets
This represents the largest concentration of U.S. air power in the region since the buildup to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
The operation's plans include both precision airstrikes on nuclear and missile facilities and a broader campaign aimed at the physical elimination of dozens of Iranian political and military leaders. While Israel is actively participating in the attacks, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have refused to grant the U.S. use of their airspace for strikes. The United Kingdom has also denied the U.S. access to its airbases, including the strategically vital facility on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
“We have always stood with the Iranian people, the people themselves.” - Andrii Sybiha, Head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning for its citizens to leave Iran and other dangerous countries, highlighting the dangers associated with the activities of the Iranian regime. The ministry's statement also noted: 'We remember and will never forget the strikes of thousands of Shahed drones on our peaceful cities and people.' This reference connects to Iran's supply of weaponry used against Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.
This operation signals a sharp escalation of tensions in the Middle East, where military action between Iran and the U.S. could have significant security repercussions far beyond the immediate conflict zone, impacting global political stability. Ukraine's stance, expressing support for the Iranian people, underscores its commitment to humanitarian principles, even as other nations face direct military threats in this conflict.
