The US is pressuring Zelensky over the peace plan: what the 28-point document contains

США вказують на необхідність прискорення мирного процесу: що передбачає новий план у 28 пунктах.

US pressure on the President of Ukraine

The US is pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding a new peace plan that was developed in consultations with Moscow. This plan contains 28 points, among which are demands that may be unacceptable for Kyiv. One of the key demands is:

  • abandoning territories in eastern Ukraine,
  • lifting sanctions on the Russian Federation,
  • stopping investigations into war crimes.

Throughout this process, President Zelensky faces a political crisis related to a corruption scandal, as well as pressure regarding the removal of the head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak.

Discussion of the terms of the peace plan

A US delegation led by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll arrives in Kyiv to discuss the terms of the peace plan. US Special Envoy Steve Whitcoff coordinated the parameters of this plan with representatives from Ukraine and Russia. At the same time, a corruption investigation is ongoing in Ukraine, resulting in two ministers losing their positions. Investigators link this investigation to a former business partner of the president, who is reportedly involved in a scheme to embezzle up to 100 million dollars.

In the context of these events, President Zelensky expressed disappointment over both sides' reluctance to adopt a peace agreement. He noted that any plan must be realistic and gain support from Ukrainians and Europeans. Germany has also emphasized the need for close coordination with European partners in addressing this issue. The political situation in Ukraine remains tense, and the president's further steps could significantly affect stability in the country and relations with international partners.

The pressure from the US on Ukraine regarding the peace plan indicates the complexity of the current situation in the region and the necessity to find a compromise among all parties. The demands contained in the plan may provoke significant resistance in Ukraine, especially in the context of national interests and sovereignty. Political instability caused by corruption scandals may complicate the decision-making process, which in turn will affect the progress in negotiations and international support for Ukraine.
