U.S. Special Envoy for Greenland to Visit in May

The United States is preparing its first official visit to Greenland by Special Envoy Jeff Landry, as tensions with Denmark continue to escalate. Scheduled for May 2025, Landry will attend the business conference 'Greenland’s Future,' taking place on May 19–20 in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. This marks a significant step in U.S. engagement with the Arctic island, which has been a point of diplomatic friction in recent months.

Jeff Landry, who was appointed to the role by President Donald Trump in December 2024, serves as the governor of Louisiana. While the visit is confirmed, it remains unclear whether Landry will hold separate meetings with Greenlandic leadership. Earlier, Landry made statements suggesting that bringing Greenland under U.S. control is a realistic goal, asserting:

'Making Greenland a part of the United States' is an achievable objective.

Diplomatic Landscape

The conference will also be attended by U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Ken Howery. Landry’s visit comes amid worsening relations between Washington and Copenhagen, fueled by Trump’s renewed rhetoric about U.S. control over Greenland. The island currently functions as a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with ongoing talks between Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. taking place under a framework agreement. The core issue of sovereignty remains unresolved, and Denmark is still negotiating the formation of a new government following parliamentary elections held in March 2025.

This visit could significantly shape future relations among the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland, especially given the historical context and Washington’s push to expand its influence in the Arctic region. Landry’s participation in the business conference also highlights the economic dimension of cooperation, which may become a key factor in upcoming negotiations and the evolving political dynamics in the area.
