U.S. Call and Russia’s Response

The United States has urged Russian leadership to stop carrying out systematic attacks on Kyiv, but Moscow dismissed the request and reiterated its demand that foreign diplomats leave the city immediately. These developments unfolded during a United Nations Security Council meeting convened at Ukraine’s request, following a massive assault on Kyiv that took place overnight on May 24.

During the attack, Russia deployed hundreds of drones and missiles, including the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. This marked at least the third time the weapon has been used since November 2024. U.S. Deputy Ambassador Temmy Bruce described the actions as an incomprehensible, dangerous, and barbaric escalation. The cost of the strike is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

International Reaction

Russia justified its Sunday strike as retaliation for an attack on a student dormitory in the Luhansk region. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya confirmed the promise of further strikes on decision-making centers and command posts. Nebenzya also called on foreign nationals, diplomats, and staff of international organizations to leave Kyiv.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari expressed the organization’s concern over the announced strikes on targets in Kyiv. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated that a strike on Kyiv could occur at any moment, adding that Russia has demonstrated the scale of its potential attack and possesses everything needed for future bombardments.

These events take place against the backdrop of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, and highlight an escalation in a conflict that has now lasted over a year.

The situation in and around Kyiv, along with the threat of further strikes, points to rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as between Russia and the West. The response from the international community—particularly the United States and the UN—reflects deep concern over developments that could lead to additional sanctions or diplomatic measures. These events underscore the severe danger and complexity facing civilians in Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

In light of the ongoing tensions, it's important to note that international reactions to the recent attacks on Kyiv are intensifying. For instance, Hungary's newly appointed Foreign Minister has issued a strong condemnation of the assaults, highlighting the growing concern among European nations regarding the escalation of violence.
