Putin's Invitation to the G20 Summit
The United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized America's readiness to engage in dialogue with Russia, highlighting the summit as a prime opportunity for Putin to interact not only with then-President Trump but also with other global leaders. Rubio expressed hope that Putin will accept the invitation.
During his remarks, Rubio noted that President Trump and Putin have held at least ten phone conversations since Trump took office.
“They have spoken multiple times by phone. I don’t have the exact count, but I believe it’s been at least ten calls. So yes, we remain open to dialogue,”Rubio stated. Additionally, Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York for a discussion lasting over 50 minutes.
Current Tensions Between Ukraine and Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signaled his readiness to meet with Putin during the G20 summit in Miami. However, Rubio pointed out that there is still no agreement between Ukraine and Russia to halt attacks targeting energy infrastructure.
“There is currently no mutual ceasefire agreement regarding attacks on energy facilities between Ukraine and Russia,”the US Secretary of State confirmed.
Meanwhile, Sergey Lavrov claimed that any potential conflict between Russia and Europe would be brief. He denied Moscow’s intentions to attack European nations, stating:
“I once again deny that Moscow plans to attack European countries.”Lavrov also remarked that recent developments in Russia-Germany relations signal the onset of a real conflict. His comments responded to Germany’s accusations linking Russia to drone attacks on a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig airport.
