New U.S. Sanctions Against Iran

The administration of President Donald Trump has intensified economic pressure on Iran by blacklisting more than 50 entities. The latest restrictions target oil tankers, financial institutions, and Iran's currency exchange market. Specifically, the Amin Exchange has been sanctioned, along with a network of companies operating in China, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. As part of this initiative—dubbed 'Economic Fury'—19 vessels from Iran's shadow fleet have also been added to the sanctions list.

Sanctions Objectives and Iran's Counter-Demands

The primary aim of these measures is to cut off Iran's oil revenue and compel Tehran to return to negotiations. In response, Iran has sent Washington a list of conditions for any potential agreement. Tehran's demands include:

  • the lifting of all U.S. sanctions
  • unfreezing of assets
  • ending the naval blockade
  • withdrawal of U.S. troops
  • payment of compensation

Iran's peace proposal was delivered through Pakistan, which acted as an intermediary. The United States has yet to issue an official response to these demands.

Commenting on the situation, Scott Bessent stated: 'Financial institutions must remain vigilant about how the regime manipulates the international financial system to create chaos.'

The escalation of U.S. sanctions signals rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, with serious implications for regional security and global oil markets. While Iran is putting forward conditions for dialogue to protect its interests, whether the U.S. will accept them remains highly uncertain. Bessent's emphasis on financial oversight highlights the need to monitor international transactions that could either support or undermine the sanctions regime.

The recent sanctions on Iran are not only a continuation of the U.S. pressure campaign but also highlight the strategic role of Chinese refineries and shadow fleets in facilitating Iranian oil exports. As the U.S. intensifies its economic measures, understanding these dynamics becomes crucial for grasping the broader implications for global oil markets and regional stability.
